We painted a recent winter Observatory painting the other day as our sibling set and I was inspired to continue with the theme of the Observatory, but chose a different season and angle to paint. Here’s the Observatory as seen from Cumberland Ave–I love all of the architectural lines happening here, as well as the buds in bloom and the boat waiting to be uncovered for the season.
This week’s sibling set is a recent view from my street corner looking towards the Portland Observatory–one of my favorite landmarks–at sunset. We both just love this silhouetted scene. Hope you do too! It’s just so moody.
Here’s another painting of Fort Gorges at sunset from the rocky shore near the East End beach. This is a regular late afternoon walk for me in November–being near the water as day turns to night is always magical. I love how the shaded rocks at the shoreline ground us in the foreground while the sunlit Fort and Casco Bay Islands glow in the distance.
Here’s a little view of the city as seen from one of the piers. I love seeing the dock post, the boats, the lobster traps, the custom house and the city behind … all in one frame. So cool. For me, it’s the grit of the working waterfront that makes our city so special.
We’re back for our Sibling series each weekend! We chose this lovely late autumn sunset scene from one of my November walks on the Eastern prom as the first sibling set of 2022. There are so many magical things happening at the same time here … a moonrise, autumn foliage still clinging on, the sunset glow on the fort and Casco Bay islands. All of it is just dreamy. I have to say that while I never look forward to the shorter days of winter, there is something so special about November walks on the prom at dusk. Hope you enjoy!
Here are four sunny gouache paintings inspired from my month on Vinalhaven this Fall. I had so much fun exploring trails and shorelines. There was inspiration at every turn and I love trying to capture some of the magic in gouache (similar to watercolour, but more opaque). These paintings measure 5 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches and are archivally matted to a standard size of 8×10.
Here’s a little winter sunrise for you … pre-snow. I love the quiet cold of winter sunrises on the Eastern Prom. They just never get old! I’ll have some more coming soon as I have witnessed some beautiful ones this month. Wishing you all a wonderful 2022 filled with joy, peace and good health. Fog on the Maine coast is so fun. It rolls in and out and over everything. Sometimes it breaks open and sometimes it doesn’t. This particular day it looked as though it was going to come in and wipe away the sunshine on shore, but it never did. Such a beautiful sight.
My brother was up in Northern Vermont recently and went for a hike up Mount Mansfield. So gorgeous! That’s a hike we have done several times together, so we knew it’s be a fun one to paint for our sibling Sunday. This view is looking towards the Northeast Kingdom. Summit views are so magnificent, aren’t they.
What a doozie of a week it has been–lots and lots of wind and rain and fast moving skies. I was so thankful to get lost in the quiet of this morning stillness from earlier this month for our sibling Sunday today. I took the first ferry into town one morning and the light was exquisite as it started to wake the shores. My brother and I couldn’t resist painting this scene with the sun-kissed island and the rippling waters. So pretty!
